Inside-Out Afghanistan
In 2022, I was commissioned to produce a series of portraits in support of a fundraising initiative for a non-profit providing Afghan women with access to legal and medical assistance. The project was developed with an awareness of the complexities of representation within a context of political urgency and geographic distance.
Rather than adopting a prescriptive approach, I invited each participant to interpret the project individually during the photographic process. Sitters were asked to respond through both image and a brief written statement, introducing a parallel structure of visual and textual engagement.
The resulting series operates as a set of distinct yet related positions. The photographs are formally consistent, while the accompanying texts introduce variation in perspective and interpretation. Neither element functions as an explanation of the other; instead, meaning emerges through their juxtaposition.
The work does not attempt to represent Afghan women directly, but instead reflects on the act of response: how individuals can engage with events beyond their immediate experience.
